Yamaha plans to make India its key global hub |
The Japanese motorcycle giant Yamaha is planning to make India as its key global hub for motorcycles and scooters. It wants to capitalize on the huge ancillary supplier base which offers the best in quality and pricing structure. The CEO and Managing Director of India Yamaha Motor, Mr. Hiroyuki Suzuki said that the high end models would be exported to the Asian region and Japan and the low cost models would be used for emerging nations in Africa. Till now Yamaha was betting more on motorcycles, but now it is focusing more on gearless scooters as part of its strategy to improve volumes. Mr. Suzuki said “The scooter market is growing very fast in India and we would like to be part of this segment with the Yamaha DNA. We will focus on young women riders initially (with the Ray) before looking at other user categories.”
It can be recalled here that Yamaha had roped in Bollywood Actress Deepika Padukone as it brand ambassador for its gearless scooter Ray. The scooters have become more popular now a days with many women consumers adding up to volumes. Also the city traffic has forced many men to take up this option as shifting gears too frequently gets irritating at times.
The company has set a target of 6.4 lakh two wheelers for this year. Out of this exports will account for nearly 1.9 lakh units. By the year 2015, the company plans to sell one million units. At the moment Yamaha has a strong presence in the Asian region. But now it wants to shift focus to India. This is due to the fact that India is stated as the second biggest market for two wheelers in the world. At the moment, Yamaha seems to be busy in setting up its strategic base in India.
