Wicketkeeper-batsman Brendon McCullum, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, Sri Lankan master batsman Mahela Jayawardene and R Vinay Kumar are star attractions at the IPL auction underway at Bangalore today.
The first major sale of the IPL auction is done and Ravindra Jadeja has been bought by Chennai Super Kings for $ 2 million or Rs 9.72 crore.
There was fierce bidding for the India all-rounder and almost every team pitched in with their bid but it was Chennai and Deccan who bid $2 million dollars — the maximum possible to beat all other comers. So the bid went into the tie-breaker.
Ravindra Jadeja sold to CSK for $2 million
Then Chennai and Deccan had five minutes to decide how much more they want to bid. And Chennai came out winners. We will not know what the amounts of the secret bids were. Jadeja was bought by KTK for 950,000 last year, so this is quite a big push up for the youngsters.
Right after being sold to CSK, Jadeja said he is extremely lucky for having gotten such high bids. “Always wanted to play under dhoni..he is a great captain and always tells me to play my natural game.”
The next highest bid was for Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene, who was sold for $1.4 million to Delhi DareDevils. Muthaih Muralitharan sold for $220,000 dollars to RCB. Bustling NZ keeper Brendan McCullum goes for $900,000 to KKR while England’s swing super star James Anderson attracted no bids at $300,000.
Right after the marquee players were sold, Rajasthan Royals bought Brad Hodge $ 475,000. The team has also bought Dinesh Chandimal for $50,000.
“Mahela Jayawardene (SL) goes to Delhi Darevils for $1.4 million”, tweeted Sidharth Mallya, adding that James Anderson (Eng) has become the first unsold player in the auction today.
Apart from Anderson, Darren Bravo also remains unsold, with a base price of $ 100,00. Even VVS Laxman (India) remains unsold. His reserve price was $400,000.West Indies’ Marlon Samuels, Australia’s Steven Smith and South Africa’s Justin Kemp also remain unsold. New Zealand’s Doug Bracewell and England’s Ravi Bopara also go unsold.
Meanwhile Parthiv Patel has been sold to Deccan Chargers for $650,000 and Herschelle Gibbs is sold to Mumbai Indians for $50,000. Mumbai Indians has also bought Mitchell Johnson for $ 300,000.
Andre Russell is the first player sold in the all-rounders category to Delhi Daredevils for $450,000.
The auction got a big surprise just hours before the players’ auction after Sahara India pulled out from the ownership of IPL franchise Pune Warriors as the group has been denied a replacement for injured Yuvraj Singh for the upcoming fifth edition of Indian Premier League.
With Sahara boycotting the IPL league, only eight major franchisees are bidding at the auction at the ITC Royal Gardenia Hotel in Bangalore.
“The season five of the IPL is coming up with some innovative ideas which will glitter the tournament,” Rajiv Shukla, the chairman and commissioner of the league said before the auction got going.
The auction will see 144 players, including several former Kochi Tuskers Kerala players, go under the hammer. These players, picked according to a combination of their valuation and star worth, will be put up for auction.
