Merc has come with estate version of CLS, Shooting Brake for European market. Yes, this beast lives up to the expectations of the estate category. We Indians who like to own estates, the dear stationary ones would definitely like this if Merc decides to surprise.

With slight modifications we can adapt the new merc Shooting Brake on Indian roads. The coupe boot has been converted to hatch without spoiling the look and infact acquired the cosmo look. Roof and rear C pillar sloped down ending with two tail lamps giving a sleek look to the rear part of the estate. Interiors are plush airy and luxurious. Lot of satin is used and for high end model porcelain touch gives the car that exodus look.

Finish looks to be best in the class. Rear seat accommodates three bit congested. Boot space is tremendous. It can accommodate everything we think to carry on a vehicle like Shooting Brake. Boot space is par equal to any other luxury sedan class, 550 -1600 litres. Wooden base option has been designed for estate and aluminum is used instead of steel to keep the weight of the vehicle light .

Merc estate in Europe has been launched two petrol and two diesel versions with all wheel drive option. In India only Merc CLS 350 is for sale. Mercedes has put this new sports tourer hatchback B-class in a position just above the A-class and below the C-class. The car is fusion of mini MPV and larger hatch back with Sports touch. The large grill, well defined nose , raised head lights and high roof line makes the look of Mercedes B-class stunning. On the rear the split tail lamp gets the attention of everyone on the road. B-class is larger than the picture we see here and taller than Mercedes C-class. Renault Scala Very Soon In India
Renault and Nissan working together to launch Scala by this Diwali. Nissan Sunny is being worked upon and rebadged as Renault Scala. We know Nissan Micra is rebadged and launched as Renault Pulse with good to have touchups. Scala is much awaited sedan from Renault. Renault is already in success quadrant this year with Duster success. So Renault is working on Scala with more care and creativity to repeat the success. Scala is going to be the Renault’s fifth product in 15 months.

Scala is retains the same Nissan’s 1.5 litre 84 bhp litre diesel engine, Still not sure whether petrol engine version going to be launched along. The engine would be mated with five speed manual transmission. However, May be Renault might also couple the engine with four speed automatic transmission. With five speed manual transmission and strong and dynamic engine, the fuel efficiency of the car is expected a 20 km per litre mileage.Renault Scala would touch the 100 kmph in few seconds.

Renault exteriors are being redone , inheriting some from Renault Fluence, which was launched in the Indian car market sometime ago and got rave reviews from all over. On the front end of Renault Scala the bumper is restyled, totally stunning, while the grille of the sedan will be similar to that of Fluence and still some more changes are being done for an exotic look. Then rear end of the sedan is expected to be as posh and premium as the front end. The tail lights would be revamped and the Renault logo will be positioned at pride. The dials are likely to feature electrically handled turn indicators. The body colored wheel arches with alloy wheels compelting the sedan. Interiors are well designed to match other premium sedans. Not sure but expecting all kinds of safety features like ABS, Airbags and climate control system. The car will also feature rear AC vents that would make it relaxing for the rear seat passenger as well.

Honda Civic To Be Discontinued In Indian Market

Honda Civic To Be Discontinued In Indian Market
Honda Civic To Be Discontinued In Indian Market
Honda pulled the plug on Civic. The most successfull luxury sedan Honda Civic is going to end its long marathon in auto market of India. Current version was released in 2006 and it is been successfull. The main reason behind the idea of decommissioning the luxury sedan is lack of apt diesel engine for the car. Recently a diesel version of Honda Civic released in European market as per Honda that engine doesnt suit for Indian roads. Indian market is taking a leap towards diesel vehicles and Civic would not be able to be in the charts for long time. In india till Diwali Civic production continues and then the end of the Saga.

Recent verison of Civic is not a huge improvement over the outgoing one, reviews are not that great may be this is one more reasaon. All competitors in its class has got a diesel version so it would be difficult for Civic to survive in the market. But Civic has been dream car of Luxury sedan lovers in India. Still Civic got good share in the market, in July 2012 138 Civic cars have been sold out approximately. This is the time for Honda to concentrate on Diesel engines for their best sellers in the Indian market. Car buyers are no more ready to bear the increasing expenses on petrol. Iam one of those in the millions who are dreaming to have a diesel Civic in the market. Hope Honda’s think tank listen takes this seriously. And I would say Civic had met the expectations in the market and had ever lasting impression in Auto world. It is a honourable decommission for Civic. Let’s see.

SUV Sales Surge – Small Car looses Charm

SUV Sales Surge – Small Car looses Charm
SUV Sales Surge – Small Car looses Charm
A small car for a happy family was the most catching marketing mantra in India for two decades. But now things look like that caption has any value to market the entry-level segment passenger cars in India. Last year small car sales dip below 50%. Small car segment sales graph disappointed manufacturers like TATA, Renault, Fiat, Nissan and Toyota who has considerable share in small car market. But premium hatchbacks retained their market shares almost as it is. Premium sedans are doing well and surprisingly SUV sales are surging up hot.

The share of the small car segment consists of cars like the Tata Nano, Maruti Alto, Ford Figo, Maruti WagonR, Hyundai’s Santro, i10 and Eon and Chevy Beat came down to 47%. At the same time premium hatchbacks Maruti Swift, Hyundai i20 and VW Polo sales gone up by retaining its market share to 11%. Surprisingly SUV sales have gone up and market share set to 32%, even though the prices of SUVs are three times of the entry level small cars. As per SIAM (Society for Indian Automobile Manufacturers), may be this is a good sign that Indian car buyers are matured and going for premium sedans and SUVs. Last year sedans prices were not slashed and fuel prices got recursive hikes over the time, even though premium sedans have done good business, their market share was 19%.

Why entry level cars have not done good business, because lack of diesel option and increase in rate of Interests. Middle-class people count to major share for entry-level car buyers community most of them already having home loan to repay, the varying interest rates giving them fears in spine to afford a new car loan. Surging fuel prices recursively is also one reason to avoid small cars in anticipation that monthly expenses could inflate. At the same time premium small cars (Maruti Swift , Hyundai i20)have done good business but for the diesel option.

The surge in SUV sales can be attributed to the infrastructure developments undergoing in India. People started loving to travel together to friends and families. All the SUVs are having the diesel options. Now the new flavor in making SUVs is urban SUV. These urban SUVs are made to fit to the daily city life roads and off roads on vacations. Auto majors eyeing this segment. Indian Auto manufacturers in partner ship with auto majors in other countries making new SUVS to hit the hot market. Mahindra and SSangyong, Maruti and Suzuki are some of them to mention.

Why SUVs

India is the one of the fastest growing economies in the world. No other country in Asia Pacific region is developing at such a pace like India. India spending power is going up in spending power, purchasing power indices charts. As all other domains automobile industry has also gained the momentum and catering the consumers with all new SUVs which is the Gen X choice in India now. People here are looking for vehicles which can be more than a car for them and not being mindful in making a choice for SUVs.

I would say SUV has all the features that we cannot use daily and we are going to pay that high price for those unused features . For Indian roads SUVs add some more junk and create more mess in traffic. I see there is hell lot of problems in using SUV in city roads of India. I bet we can never unleash the power of exotic SUVs in the traffic, we can never use our all the four wheels at once, parking the SUV is exhaustive in city, SUV need more space on the roads to move which makes driving to miserable. But SUV would be perfect choice If one residing in a remote area and have lot of necessity to go around place to carry freight.

SUV enthusiasts claim that SUVs are safer than other car. Yes they may be correct to this fact but nowadays we are getting same kind of safety features like air bags, ABS, road and rear sensors etc. in normal cars also. So my point is why we should pay more to an SUV.For the same kind of safety features in SUV it burns more fuel that’s all. SUVs will always have higher center of gravity than small cars, so there are always more chances of toppling until the wheel base is properly increased, and that makes the vehicle bigger and all the above facts gets more tough.

So, you might have guessed, I am not a big fan of SUV’s. I do not understand the point of them in Indian cities. They do not add anything, except a higher line of sight, than you can get from any sedan unless they are used for the intended purpose. I would love to take a nice SUV out for vacation on a rugged road on the side of deep valleys, but I can’t see anyone taking their loved ones and SUV anywhere near an unpaved roads. I just can’t understand why SUV’s have become so popular. Please don’t go crazy beyond SUVs just by looks or to for a status sake. Please be mindful in spending that much money on any SUV.

Mahindra Korando – Mahindra Ssangyong Future SUV

Mahindra Korando – Mahindra Ssangyong Future SUV
Mahindra Korando – Mahindra Ssangyong Future SUV
Mahindra Ssangyong Korando is the perfect amalgamation of a luxury sedan and a sturdy light SUV. Ssangyong’s Korando is in Korean markets for more than two decades. After some generations it has been redesigned in Europe by world known Italian car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. Mahindra acquired Ssangyong in Feb 2011 , both the firms have high expectations on Korando and anticipating that Korando going to be the game changer in Indian SUV market. After Korando they are going to launch Rexton II. Korando is the first vehicle that was built on Monocoque frame by Ssangyong its history of 56 years.

Korando is not huge or bulky as any SUV buyer in India expects. But its sporty and muscular looks keep it in the SUV class. It got more Urban SUV style looks , of course this is the next generation of SUVs that are going to create ripples in Indian market. It got a small wheel base of 2650mm. Flared wheel arches that enclose 17 inch tyres. A high beltline, small headlights, semicircular grille looks pretty small , with black mesh and bulky bonnet looks menacing. The front face of Korando is quite bulged and heavy. Body color mirrors with turn indicators, diamond shaped fog lamps and meshed air dam suits the overall aggressive look. A chin that is under the nose of SUV gives the nose a tame look. I think Scorpio has a good nose than Korando. This Korean SUV is going to be the first launch in partnership of Mahindra and Ssangyong , I think it should be more impressive . I strongly believe that Korando should shed its outdated look.

Interiors of Korando are pretty straight forward and logical not so plush and airy as Fortuner. The plastic dashboard fit and finish are far better than any other Mahindra vehicle we have in the market. Other highlights of the cabin are luxury seat layouts, smart key , cruise control and heated sets for driver and passengers. But Indian SUV buyer expects alteast seven people are accommodated inside but Korando can get in only five comfortably. Safety features like electronic stability program that reduces the risk and emergency stop signal that glows when you suddenly stop the vehicle. The steering isn’t particularly accurate and there’s a mushy area around the straight-ahead position.

Korando comes with 2.2 turbo diesel engine , capable of 173 bhp at 4000 rpm and a maximum torque of 36O Nm at 2000-1000 rpm. As a front-wheel-driving car, the engine is placed over the drivewheels, vastly improving its traction in hazardous conditions like snow, mud, and gravel. Korando is expected to come with six -speed automatic transmission which is a good thing. This diesel SUV on Indian roads expected to give a mileage of 12 -15 kmpl.

Market expecting Korando could start at around Rs 15lakh and undercut rivals like the Captiva, Fortuner and Santa Fe.

Technical Specifications are not available yet.

TATA Safari Storme

TATA Safari Storme
TATA Safari Storme
India Auto Major TATA’s , much awaited SUV TATA Safari Storme code named TATA Safari Merlin, was unveiled in Auto Expo 2012, Jan in Pragati Maidan New Delhi. Since its inception into SUV family , in 1998 this SUV has undergone engine tweaking and face-lifts couple of times but under the skin it remained the same. It was a huge disappointment again for the SUV admirers again. Earlier Storme was slated to launch by the end of July 2012 but now looks like it is delayed again.

TATA Safari Storme is being built on the Aria platform with X2 chasis and inherited the wishbone suspension from TATA Aria. A 200mm reduced wheelbase against TATA Aria (Storme has 2650 wheel base), which helped Storme in Torsion rigidity and weight. The Stormes’s chassis is 35 Kg lighter and 45 percent stiffer than old Safari which is really a commendable feature in TATA Storme. Steering wheel is also inherited from TATA Aria. Noticeable changes like new squared-off headlamp with projector lamps with-in, new vertical Grille gives a Landrover kind of look. In addition to them a new bumper with sleek air-dam gives a complete look to Storme. A more protruding foot-step is not that impressive and don’t think it serves more than what Safari had earlier. On the Rear you see good share of changes made. A twin chrome tipped exhausts and high mounted gives sporty look to the vehicle. Spare wheel has been relocated to under the floor through rear door. With all these recognizable changes Storme looks heavier, urban SUV style and sportier than Safari.

The interiors are done in pseudo wood finish, while the high quality upholstery further adds more killer looks to the SUV. I would say beige colour is not for India, we could see the dust piling up on beige color seats, yes beige color seats for that exotic look are part of Storme’s cabin. Revised center console and rest all borrowed from Aria. Fit and finish of the panels are better than Safari and Aria. The Seating comfort in Storme matchless with another SUV in the market. Acres of legroom and spacious to sit back and relax. Driver’ seat gives a high view of the surroundings and you feel like commanding the road

The Tata Safari Storme have the same 2.2 litre of DiCOR engine but will be mated to a new G76 MKII gearbox for better gear shifts and is more responsive. This engine is capable of producing the 140 BHP of power and 315 Nm of torque as Aria. Storme’s clutch is lighter than some other SUVs I have experienced. Slowing down a SUV needs considerable braking force and the Storme now comes with disc brakes all round and is equipped with ABS. You feel spongy, but the Storme comes to a halt without much noise.

Storme missed the exotic feature that everybody expects , Climate control and GPS navigation which are there in Aria. May these features would cost more but still buyers are happy to pay for them nowadays.

Mahindra Rexton II

Mahindra Rexton II
Mahindra Rexton II
Mahindra Rexton is a seven seater SUV made in partnership with north Korean auto major Ssangyong . Mahindra unveiled Rexton along with Korando in auto expo 2012 Delhi. Rexton been in the Korean market for quite sometime and proved to be a successfull SUV in Korea and in Latin Amerca. After Mahindra acquired 70% stake in Ssangyong , Rexton is the first vehicle to be launched in India. Rexton is undergoing all kinds of modifications so as to take a smooth ride on Indian roads. Mahindra is planning to place Rexton in a segment far beyond from XUV 500, altogether targeting a different set of audience. Estimated price that is going to be attached to Rexton is between 17-20 lakhs.

Rexton is in Korean market for over a year and still it is the most popular SUV in the market. Rexton is not well known for its looks but for its design. Mahindra Rexton II is going to be best looking SUV from Ssangyong. Rexton II is made on Mercedes M-class frame. The chassis is a traditional body on frame model. The three strip chrome grille makes it look like a Mercedes. from the side the Rexton looks good with large glass area, tinted windows and big 18inch wheels. The door handles and the outside rear view mirror are in body colour and at the rear the design not exciting, a routine look a large boot door and a spoiler. The tail lamps are big and rectangular which doesn’t add charm to the vehicle.

Interiors of Rexton II are designed with utmost care to impress the drivers in todays competitive market. The big central console and chunky dashboard gives you a relaxing feel. A must mention feature is a 5.5 inch lcd screen that can be connected to a digital camera or a camcorder. We do notice the cheap plastic panels and some fake wood inserts are spoiling the airy look of the cabin. The dials are illuminated with different color lights. Rexton impresses the audience in the aspects of space and controls available. Ample space in the vehicle enables the passengers to sit back and relax while driver takes care of the traffic and all the controls are within the reach of driver. Top end Rexton get s the facility of electrically adjustable and heated front seats. The luggage spaxce is limited with all seven seats placed, seats need to be folded for boot space of 1338 litres.

The Rexton is likely to come with one engine – an old Mercedes-sourced 2.7-litre, in-line five-cylinder, DOHC engine that is longitudinally mounted and develops a modest 165bhp. The unit develops 188PS and 402 Nm of torque and uses a 4WD system. Acceleration is good with 100kmph in 12 seconds and a top speed of 200kmph. The engine is matched to both a 5-speed manual and automatic transmission gear box. Until you walk down to Rexton you don’t see Rexton is that big as Ford endeavour or any other SUV in its class. I don’t think Rexton could match the such huge SUVs like Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and Renault Koleos and own XUV 500 in all kinds of features.. Lets wait and see.

The Ssang Yong Rexton II is a practical and affordable SUV. Its strengths would be the competitive price and premium features. Built quality is good but off road abilities aren’t up to the mark when compared to its competitors. Even though the SUV shares a few common things with the old Mercedes M Class poor styling definitely a aspect to think over.
